Why a YouTube link fails to import: 355 real attempts, 62 failures, and what caused them

If a YouTube link refuses to import, the cause is almost always one of two things, and neither is the link being "broken".

We checked our own import log for the last 30 days (to 29 October 2026). People pasted 355 YouTube links into Vyexa. 293 imported fine (83%). 62 did not, plus 2 still downloading when we counted. This is what the 62 were.

49 of 62: the video was too long

Free accepts sources up to 120 minutes. Anything longer is refused in a few seconds with a message that says so. That was 49 of the 62 failures, 79%. The log shows real lengths: 97, 107, 114 and 239 minutes. Several people were only 7 to 24 minutes over the limit.

What to do:

  • Cut the video at the YouTube source first, or paste a link to the part you care about. A 97-minute podcast is one trim away from working.
  • Or use a paid pack: it takes longer sources. A 4-hour Twitch VOD imported in 142 seconds on one of our tests, see the Twitch article on this blog.

10 of 62: the video was unavailable

A locked video next to an unlocked one that plays

Private, deleted, members-only, age-restricted or region-locked videos cannot be downloaded by anyone, including us. The log says only "Video unavailable". Open the link in a private browser window. If you cannot watch it there without signing in, Vyexa cannot fetch it either.

What to do: set the video to Public or Unlisted, then paste again. Or upload the file directly.

3 of 62: the download itself failed

Three cases, about 5%, where YouTube was reachable but the download broke. We cannot tell you a rule for these. Trying again later fixed some. If it fails twice, upload the file instead: file upload does not depend on YouTube at all.

What we got wrong

Our message for "too long" tells you the limit, but until recently did not tell you how far over you were. People who were 7 minutes over probably read it as "this tool cannot handle my video".

Checklist

  1. Under 120 minutes on Free? If not, trim or go paid.
  2. Opens in a private window without login? If not, change the privacy setting.
  3. Still failing? Upload the file.

Try it: paste a link at vyexa.net, Free needs no card.
